THE BOOMING Metropolis

of Lac La Biche... It's a town of about 4000 people. That's about it. There are lakes. There are trees. Yup. Oh, there are birds and deer... yup. That's it.

Luckily, I've been doing nothing but working while I am up here. Well, that and reading my Harry Potter book. We're staying in some student accommodation (townhomes) which is actually pretty decent. We did have to buy up a storm of pots and pans, groceries, etc. which ate up my per diems. But at least, I can eat oatmeal or eggs for breakfast (under $1) rather than having to buy it at a restaurant ($10). I bought a bag of "Lipton's Rice n' Shit" and "Premade Sweetass Potroast" and made that up for dinner yesterday. I must have been hungry, for strangely enough it hit the spot. I really don't understand how people can eat premade food. It's gross. What's worse - the people who make it think that you'll really like this shit. I don't put that much sugar into any meat product, no matter what. I suppose it made up for the blandness of the rice.

I could have made the rice a little better... it asked for 2cups of water and I didn't have a measuring cup. So I guesstimated with a mug that I bought. I put it probably around 3 cups of water. It took about 40 minutes to make 20 minute rice. Afterwards, I looked around and realized that I had my Nalgene bottle (that has mL indicated) and a ziploc container that has cups indicated, and a couple of water bottles (one that was 500mL). Damn it all to hell. I should be smarter than that. Oh well.

I found a little internet cafe/billiard place on Main Street. It's pretty cool. The owner's really nice. He brings his fresh cut flowers to the outdoor farmer's market in Edmonton every Saturday. I think you should go and support him and buy his flowers. The market is open from 10-2pm every saturday from Spring to Fall.

Well, I am off on my bike to explore a little more of this place. I brought 3 cameras with me, but I really haven't been inspired to take any photos at all. (sigh) Maybe I should head back home and read more Harry Potter... The 6th book will soon be upon us!

if only you were here
I went over to help L&M paint their new house, only to find that what they had already painted was peeling off the walls. Gah! Looks like the original paint was probably oil, that seems the most likely explanation. I went with M to Home Depot and showed her the primer that you can put over oil, over which you can paint latex paint.

Then had to help calm M down as she stressed about how much more work it was going to be. I think she's doing okay now. I got through to her that the primer is just one extra coat of paint.

Also, I then spent most of my time taping the stucco ceiling (which is tedious and hard on the neck) instead of painting (which I enjoy).

They are lucky to have a friend like me :-)

Oh dear!
H says it's most likely oil paint - either that, or they didn't sand down the gloss first. If the paint looks shiny, it should be sanded down first. Primer will of course take care of the oil paint issue, which is most likely the culprit. You're right of course; it is just one more coat of paint. But what a pain it is that they have to redo what they've already done!

We have a stipple ceiling here. We didn't tape it when we painted the baby's room. We just tried to get as close as possible with the roller and then dab up at the top with a small paintbrush. We bought a small container of white paint and, wherever we hit the roof with the brush, we just covered it over with the white paint. Much easier than taping when the ceiling is textured like that. (I say "we" metaphorically, of course; I was on bed rest, so H did everything.) Anyway, my folks tuned me in to that technique, which is what they did when they repainted their place a couple of years ago. Worked like a charm.

Sorry I wasn't there to help. Could have possibly saved you the whole taping extravaganza. But you're right; we are all lucky to have a friend like you!
